Dropping the Hammer: 6 Tannhauser Scenarios

Here we go, the largest post of custom scenarios I’ve ever made. This includes updates of previous scenarios and no less than four previously unreleased scenarios. Now, I will admit these are pretty Reich vs. Union heavy, but the Revised Rules included plenty of Matriarchy centric scenarios. So, without further delay lets get started…

First, Operation: Cage the Devil, a Reich vs. Union affair requiring the Union to capture and escape with a live Stosstruppen.

Next, is Operation: Mirror Mirror, a title reference to the classic Star Trek episode. This scenario pits the Matriarchy against invaders from an alternate dimension. Think Major Volkov with a goatee.

Now, we come to Operation: Overkill, a Revised Rules remake of an older scenario from 2008, pitting the Union against a force of Demonic entities, and Marquis Heizinger is their only salvation.

Project Update

Ok, right now I’m in a Tannhauser manic state spurred by the recent FFG announcements. So, I’ve got a lot of things going right now.

First, is the ongoing play-testing of my recently released Operation: Book Ends. I think it works well, but I would like some outside opinions.

Then, there are two other scenarios Operation: Cage the Devil and Operation: Overkill. These are nearly complete and I’m hoping to have a three player variant of Operation: Overkill here soon.

Next, I’m still working on some new map ideas, but maps take forever to develop.

Finally, I have a rule set and limited graphics for a new “Fire Zouave” character, armed with a flamethrower of course, think Guy Montag. Also I have a few bonus tokens for the coming months.

Scenario, Operation: Book Ends

I’ve finally finished the Revised Rules Edition of my scenario “Operation: Book Ends” It’s available below in two PDF files. The first is the scenario briefing with the rules and token stats, the second is the print-and-make token sheet for the scenario.

A little background on this scenario, I released the first edition in September 2008, and it is extremely loosely based on the Read or Die TV series (not the OVA).

Google Sketch Up Map Idea

Here is my first real attempt to create a Tannhauser Style Map using Google’s Sketch Up 3D software. Now, This is just a rough draft, and as I learn more about the program I should be able to create more complex and detailed maps. The reason I’m looking at using Sketch Up, is that the Tannhauser Maps have an obvious top down 3D perspective, where one can see what’s on the wall, etc. I’ve made maps just using Photoshop, but they feel very flat. Battle Report: “Super Death-match”

Ok, everyone it’s time for a large Revised Rules Tannhauser Death-match. This was a massive seven versus seven, Union versus Reich Match. It lasted eight turns, so this will be a long report. Before we get to the details of combat, let’s take a look at the setup and characters involved. First the roster (my Wife plays the Reich and I the Union):

Next the basic set up:

This Death-match was fought on the Ksiaz Castle map, all objectives and action circles, contained crate tokens (see pg 9), and each side received 2 Command Points (CP) per turn as in any death-match.

For this game the Reich deployed via the stairs and the Union via the front door.

Now let’s look at Turn 1:

In Turn 1 the Reich rolled a 7 for initiative and with Heizinger’s  +4 bonus their total was 11, the Union actually rolled a 10 but it wouldn’t make a difference in this case. The Reich deployed Eva first, followed by the Union’s Delta 1, everyone but Stosstruppen 2, Heizinger, John, and Tala deployed. The initial positions at the end of turn on looked like this.

As you can see the Reich are clumped up at the bottom of the Stairs, and the Union forces are spread out along the bottom of the map.

In Turn 2 the Reich Rolled 9 +4 while the Union only rolled a 5. First to move was Schocktruppen 2 who moved down the hall to the light-purple circles on the right of the map. Delta 1 then moved up the map and tossed an AN-M11 into the combination orange and purple circle, engulfing the two tiled halls in fire. While no significant combat took place in Turn 2  Karl did toss a grenade at Delta 1, who was unharmed thanks to a CP. Also, Schocktruppen 1 found 1CP in a crate, and Eva traded her Luger for an MP-40 out of a crate. At the end of the turn John and Tala deployed while Heizinger and Stosstruppen 2 remained off the board. Near the end of the second turn this is how the map looked (before John and Tala deployed.)

Several of the Reich’s forces remain at the base of the stairs, and the map is now split by the AN-M11’s fire.

Turn 3, both the Reich and the Union rolled 2s for initiative but with Heizinger’s +4 the Reich wins initiative again. In Turn 3 we’ll begin to see some real combat, but first Stosstruppen 1 takes a grenade from a crate. Next, Alpha 2 moves up the right side of the board and attacks Schocktruppen 2, rolling 7, 7, 4, 4, 4, scoring two success, while the Schocktruppen counters with a good shock roll of 5, 9, 8, 1, taking no damage. The Schocktruppen spends 1 CP to counter attack with his new Mechanical Arm; rolling 10, 8, 6, 1, 2, 2, even at his lowest Combat Value (CV) the Schocktruppen scores three successes. Alpha 2 fails to block any wounds and dies; activating his “Only Unit for the Job” ability, and using his final activation to again attack Schocktruppen 2. Alpha 2 rolls 10, 7, 6, 5, 2; scoring three successes while Schocktruppen 2 rolled 6, 5, 4, 3 receiving no wounds.

The Schocktruppen surviving his battle with Alpha 2 moves down the map and searches a crate, he finds nothing useful. Next Delta 1 attacks Eva along the red circled servants hall on the left of the board. Delta 1 rolls 7, 4, 3, 2, Eva rolls  8, 7, 7, 6, receiving no wounds and spending a CP to counter-attack. She counter-attacks with a 9, 7, 6, 2, 1, while Delta 1 rolls 9, 8, 3, 2, receiving no wounds due to Eva’s low CV. Then Karl fires Doom at Delta 1, but the result is much the same and Delta 1 is unharmed. Next there are several characters repositioning and a couple more exchanges of fire but no one is wounded. Finally the second Stosstruppen deploys.

Turn 4, the Union finally win initiative with a 9 while the Reich rolled only a 2 +4. John goes on overwatch.

Turn 4 sees a fury of activity, beginning with a massive exchange between Delta 1 and the Reich’s forces. first Delta attacks Eva, Eva escapes injury. Then Eva attacks Delta, she fails to wound him, and then he spends a CP to counter-attack, rolling 9, 6, 3, 3, Eva’s shock roll is 5, 4, 1, 1, she is wounded once but used 1 CP to shake it off. Next Tala move to the center of the map and tosses 440 grams of TNT in to the hall, obliterating Stosstruppen 2.

Now, Schocktruppen 1 opens fire on Delta 1 rolling an impressive 9, 9, 8, 6, 1, while Delta 1 rolls only 7, 5, 4, 3. These wounds bring an end to Delta 1. The final combat of turn 4 is when Stosstruppen 1 tosses a grenade at Delta 2 wounding him twice.

Turn 5, the Reich again wins initiative, the AN-M11 finally burns out, and no one is on overwatch. The turn opens with Schocktruppen 1 opening fire on Brown; the Schocktruppen rolls 8, 8, 6, 4, 4, scoring three successes while Barry’s shock roll is 10, 9, 5, 5, receiving two wounds and spending 1 CP to shake one off. Then Barry returns fire on the Schocktruppen, rolling 9, 8, 7, 6, 3, 1, while the Schocktruppen would counter with 8, 7, 7, 4, he would still suffer one wound and spend 1 CP to shake it off. Then Karl attacks Barry with Doom but does no damage. Next Delta 2 tosses a second AN-M11 onto the purple, green, and red circle at the end of the north hall (see below).

Then Eva comes around the corner and attacks Barry with her “Strafe.” She rolled 10, 7, 7, 3, 2, activating her natural 10 power (see pg. 36), forcing Barry to use only two dice for his shock roll, he rolls a 2,3. Barry suffers three wounds, and spends 1 CP to counter-attack Eva. Barry rolls 10, 6, 6, 3, 2, 1, and with his natural 10 (see pg. 48)  adds a 4, and a 3 to his roll. Eva rolled a great shock roll of 10, 9, 8, 5, blocking any possible damage.

Now MacNeal moves up from the south to attack Schocktruppen 2 with his Flash Gun MK 1 (see pg. 47), he rolls 10, 10, 8, 5, 3, the natural 10 adds another 10 and a 4, while the Nighteyes (see pg. 46) turns the 4 to a 6. The final result is 10, 10, 10, 8, 6, 5, 3, and the Schocktruppen barely stands a chance rolling 9, 5, 1, 1. Schocktruppen 2 is now useful only as a colander.

Then Stosstruppen 1 moves unharmed through the fire and attempts to bull-rush Delta 2, failing to get past he slaughters him through the door, sated by killing delta 2 the Stosstruppen ends his move.

Finally Marques General Heizinger enters the fray, using the Patmos Amulet (see pg. 38) he fails to force Tala in to blind terror. A rather unimpressive entry, but he made his presence known. A little later Tala and Eve then get into a large exchange resulting in Tala suffering three wounds. And that brings to a close Turn 5.

Turn 6, again the Reich scores a combined 11 for initiative, and Schocktruppen 1 goes on overwatch. Eva attacks Barry with “Strafe” rolling 10, 6, 4, 4, 1, Barry 10, 10, and is unharmed. Barry spends a CP to counter-attack but fails to score any successes. Eva continuing her activation bull-rushes through the wounded Barry. Barry then attempts to flee, the Schocktruppen on overwatch has other plans. With all his combined bonus of the new Command Pack, he rolls 10, 10, 8, 7, 2, 1, Barry rolled only  9, 6, 3, 1. Barry finally succumbs to his wounds and dies.

Now attempting to move south Karl is wounded twice by the fire in the hall, he uses a CP to shake of one wound. and attacks Tala with Doom but does no damage. Alpha 1 seeing an opportunity tosses a grenade between Karl and Schocktruppen 1. The grenade wounds the Schocktruppen twice and Karl only once, again he spends 1 CP.

Suddenly Stosstruppen 1 rushes south and steals the First Aid kit Barry had dropped, not because he needs it but to prevent Tala from getting it.

Heizinger moves through the fire and suffers two wounds, using the Patmos Amulet, he forces Alpha 1 to attack Tala, but doesn’t wound her. This would bring Turn 6 to an end.

Turn 7 and 8. Beginning Turn 7 the Reich has initiative, and Tala and Alpha 1 go on overwatch. Hermann advances a few spaces, and uses the Patmos Amulet on Alpha 1, Alpha 1 turns to attack Tala activating her overwatch attack. Tala kills Alpha 1 in self defense. Tala goes off overwatch, followed by several exchanges that result in no injuries. Finally Karl and Schocktruppen 1’s combined fire bring down Tala. Then Turn 8 begins with the second AN-M11 burning out, and the Union have initiative. John uses his Medal of Honor to go on overwatch, and save his CP. John stands alone against five of the Reich’s finest. Needless to say he dies heroically, but it takes the combined efforts of Eva, Schocktruppen 1, Stosstruppen 1, and Karl.

So the Reich wins having eliminated all of the Union forces. This brings to a close what may be my longest Battle Report yet. The only real rule question of the battle was does the AN-M11 do damage upon detonation, the rules are not clear, and we played that it only does damage when moving through a “burning” circle. All in all this game put many of the new Revised Rules to the test and gave us a good look at the new trooper abilities.

Fantasy Flight’s Renewed Tannhauser Fervor

This year is the first year Fantasy Flight has been the sole owner of the Tannhauser franchise since purchasing the IP from T.O.Y., and it is looking to be a great year for Tannhauser fans. We’ve seen an unprecedented number of Tannhauser releases including the new Revised Rules and the Union and Reich Trooper Packs. Now today we see yet another announcement that Asteros the Minotaur is on his way. Also there is mention of the long awaited updated Daedalus Map Pack expansion, leading us to believe we may see both new items by the end of the year (although FFG has not set a release date for either).

Tannhauser Mythopoeia September 2010 Ed.

Here is the Mythopoeia updated to include information from the new Tannhauser Trooper Packs.

The new articles include Camp 111, Kampfmesser Bose, and the AN-M11. Also the Commando, Schocktruppen, and 42nd MSF articles have been updated. There’s more updates and corrections throughout but those are the major ones.

Battle Report: The Dehumanizing Process

This weekend me and the wife were able to get in a couple rounds of Tannhauser, we played the somewhat odd Dehumanizing Process scenario included with the Reich Troop Pack.

The basic gist of the scenario is, it’s a Reich training exercise focused on object recovery. So basically it’s Karl Zermann and four Reich troopers running around trying to collect as many crates as they can. What I found odd about the scenario was how lop-sided  the teams seemed. the Reich force consists of five characters, while the “Opposing Force” consists of only three heroes. I chose MacNeal, Brown, and Volkov. and even with that level of firepower I barely made a dent in the Reich force. Needless to say my wife won, and then we switched sides. Me and the wife have very different playing styles, but I was able to win because she couldn’t control much territory with only three characters.

Unlike some games Tannhauser has no built in system for calculating team or character strength. For instance some games assign a point value to each character or unit, this value while somewhat arbitrary is designed usually to indicate the size or strength of a unit. So it can be hard to tell if a particular combination of characters are balanced against the opposing force. But we could use “Health Points” as a kind of measure. In this example the Reich force had a total of 16 health points, while the opposing force had only 12. As I said lop-sided.

All in all it was a fun little scenario, but I’m not sure the opposing force has much chance of winning against a relatively good Reich player.

Current Project Status

The Tannhauser Mythopoeia- in an edit to align it with the 2nd Edition Rules.

Vatican Inquisitors Faction- on hold, the new rules make no mention of the Vatican Cathedral Forces.

Book Ends Scenario- Will Update to reflect 2nd Edition Rules.

Operation Recovery Scenario- May Update if necessary.

Tile Style Maps- The Hybrid and Avalon Hill Tile maps are now considered complete, as I no longer have the base art files.

Projects still in the planning stage:

The UFO Temple Map

John Richards- Union Troop to Hero conversion. May now make more sense with the introduction of the Troop Pack.

Two more Union Hero ideas, and Blutstrum “troopers.”
