Hi Def. Preview Footage

Here is some un-narrated preview footage from my new camera, it’s full HD, but has no optical zoom so close ups are not possible. Basically I’m still testing to see if Full 1080 HD is necessary or if a 720P camera with optical zoom would be better.

Here is a 1080P video…

HD Tannhauser 1080P

The truth is I just don’t know; I don’t have access to a variety of cameras to see which is best. What I do know is 1080P gives me the most detail, but I can’t afford a 1080P camera with high end optics that will produce good close ups.

So what do you guys think, higher resolution with no close up ability, or should I get a camera with optical zoom but no 1080HD.

UPDATE:

I wasn’t happy with the lack of optical zoom, so I took that camera back. We were at the Pawn Shop today (gun shopping), and I found a Sony Handy cam for 20% off, so I picked it up (and an AR-15 stripped lower). It has 25x zoom and full 1080 HD, I will get my first HD video made after Easter.

More thanks to Carlos Castaneda from the FFG forums for putting together three maps for playing Tannhauser via IM or Email.

More Play by IM/Email info

Carlos over on the FFG forums has made a couple of good suggestions. First if your going to try Windows Live Messenger 2011 as you IM client, you can use Messenger Plus (http://pages.msgplus.net/5/Plus5LP1/) to install a dice rolling script that will transmit virtual dice rolls of any kind as a Instant Message. After you install Messenger Plus you need to install the following script file (https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0BzVAJpIQG8bNNjk3ZGEyMmItOWVjNS00MGRiLWE5NWItN2JmNWVlM2JiMTAy&hl=en). Once it’s all setup you can use the /roll command to run the script like so: /roll 5d10 will roll five ten sided virtual dice, and give a result for each (and add them together). It’s working really well for me.

One more idea from Carlos is to make a dice roll system for searching crate tokens so it will help eliminate cheating. He suggested assigning numbers to crate tokens so a die roll could determine what you found. Thinking about that I came up with this system.

When you search a crate you roll one D10, and the number is matched to the items as follows.

1 One Command Point
2 Two Command Points
3 First Aid Kit
4 Extra Ammunition
5 MP 40
6 Sten Mark II
7 Trench Gun
8 Combat Knife
9 M15 Smoke Grenade
0 Generic Grenade

I stuck with the D10 so a real Tannhauser die could be used if necessary.

Well that’s all for now, I’ll hopefully be able to test all this out in a week or two.

Still in a holding pattern…

Just to let you guys know I’m still in a holding pattern, pending my acquisition of an HD camera, and finding the time to update the Mythopoeia. In a  couple of weeks me and Darknight will hopefully find the time to test out the play Tannhauser by IM idea. The May Bonus Token will be on time, but that’s all the custom work I have upcoming for the moment.

If any one is interested in playing against me in some Tannhauser by IM please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

If we as a community can get a good system for playing Tannhauser remotely maybe we can pull together a tournament of some kind. Just a thought…

Play Tannhauser by IM/Email, or Webcam

Me and Darknight (from the FFG forums) have been working on playing Tannhauser by IM or maybe even by webcam. Now I know that it will require lots of trust to do dice rolls and ensure a fair game (less so if you have webcams), but this will be great for people like myself who have no one to play with except their wife. Not that she’s not fun to play with, but she always wins.

So we were thinking you could do this like chess where each player has the full game laid out, and sends their opponent their moves.

The other thing you need besides loads of trust is a numbered map to make moving easy, so I’m providing the Novgorod map as a beta for this system, it’s been numbered and can be printed out on a regular piece of paper for easy reference.

An example of how to notate a move would be (MacNeal 64->70).

Please let me know what you guys think, Me and Darknight should be playing our first game in a few weeks. (Scheduling issues, you know) I will try to let you all know how that goes.

Note: yes I know there is a Vassal module for Tannhauser but it is not updated for the Revised Rules, and last I heard FFG sent a cease and desist to the person developing a new version.

Government Shutdown Affecting Service

It’s pretty much guaranteed that the Government will shut down tonight at midnight in which case I will not have any extra cash to spend on new HD web cams. So if you see that the USA has closed for the next week or so, I too will be shut down for the next month.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed, but I have little hope, and expect not to update again till May at the earliest.

Well it appears the USA will stay open at least another five days, but I’m going to stay in a holding pattern until the real budget is signed by Obama.

Video Preview this week…

I wasn’t able to film a full video this week, I’m probably going to pick up a hi def web cam so these will look a bit better, but I wanted to post something so here is a preview of what I’m working on.

Preview video.

The completed version will be up as soon as I work out the kinks.

The End is Near…

Well folks this is the end; time and tide have caught up with me and it’s time to shut the doors on Miah999’s Tannhauser Blog.

Good Bye to all…
