Third Preview for Rising Sun, Falling Shadows

FFG has just posted their third and final preview for the soon to be released Tannhauser novel. Check it out:

The Enemy of the Gods…

Akhenaten ("living spirit of Aten") known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV (sometimes given its Greek form, Amenophis IV, and meaning Amun is Satisfied), was a Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt who ruled for 17 years and died perhaps in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is especially noted for abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing worship centered on the Aten, which is sometimes described as monotheistic or henotheistic. An early inscription likens the Aten to the sun as compared to stars, and later official language avoids calling the Aten a god, giving the solar deity a status above mere gods.

Akhenaten tried to bring about a departure from traditional religion, yet in the end it would not be accepted. After his death, traditional religious practice was gradually restored, and when some dozen years later rulers without clear rights of succession from the Eighteenth Dynasty founded a new dynasty, they discredited Akhenaten and his immediate successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as "the enemy" in archival records…

The ring of Akhenaten discovered by Hans Kamler in a desert dig site not far from Amarna inscribed with ancient spells and holding strange power. The ring was lost sometime after Kamler’s death…

The Sun is Rising…

According to Amazon we should expect to see Tannhauser: Rising Sun, Falling Shadows, between June 15th and 19th.

Let’s all hope it hits the mark.

The Grimorians Return

Today is kind of like a Tannhauser Blog rerun, but not quite…

Today the Grimorians return fully revised, edited, and with new equipment cards, which did not exist when they were first released.

The Red Skull Complete

Here are the finished tokens and rules for the Tannhauser Red Skull Mod. Don’t let the small number of tokens, or the lack of Epic status fool you, the Skull is more than a match for any Tannhauser character, even The Captain himself.

Fan Submission: Tannhauser Open Battlefield

Today Ron brings us a somewhat unusual mod for Tannhauser. A sort of blending of DUST Tactics open battlefields, and Tannhauser’s individual combat.

To play, the first thing you’ll need to play (other than Tannhauser’s core game of course) is a new map, like this one…

Enter the Red Skull

As you know I’ve been having a bit of trouble moving forward with the Howling Commandos, So I’ve decided to move on to the Red Skull!

I’m again going with the new HeroClix Avengers film series figures,

For the character sheet I wanted to go with the traditional Reich style, but I thought it might be neat to replace the traditional green hue with a reddish tone.

red sheet 1 copy

I didn’t want to go “Epic” with the Skull because I want him to be able to have two Troopers in his squads. So, he’s more Zor’ka like, also I kept his Mental stats a little low, so his interplay with Hoss would be more interesting.

Finally here is a preview of his special object.

Notes: This is a once per game ability, and does not require an action. The new Troopers will enter the game as Reinforcements on the next turn.

Well I hope you all enjoy.

Dust Tactics Beach Front Tiles and Example

Major Mishap, suggested that I try to make a beach shore, and here are some tile that I think work really well together. First is the beach, next we have calm seas, and last is beach to barren earth transition. After the jump below you can see how these tiles can be combined with the previous tiles I’ve posted.

It has been requested…

It has been requested that I try to make some DT tiles of sand dunes or beach, here is a first draft, let me know what you think.

Dust Tactics Desert Tiles

Today I have some desert theme tile for Dust Tactics. First is desert ground to concrete transition, second is plain desert ground (which uses a seamless texture). Next is the desert ground with some craters, and finally is the desert with some dried cracked mud. With these printed and mounted, and combined with the already available DT tiles there will be plenty of desert battlefields for you to create. I suggest you print three to four of each tile and mount them on 1/16 inch card board.

That is all.

Geek Security Breach

If you haven’t already heard there was a possible security breach on the Geek sites i.e., etc. You should check out this notice and take action if you feel it’s necessary.

Dust Tactics Tiles

I’m starting work on some DT tiles, the first is some nice grass and rocky terrain, and the second is a transition to the standard DT concrete style. I plan on doing more of these once I have an expanded set of resources.

In Limbo…

As you may know I sometimes write for FFG itself, but I’m sad to report my “handler” at FFG has left his employment there. And since no one from FFG has contacted me to continue my efforts to help promote Tannhauser, my status as a guest writer is a bit in limbo. So, who’s to say if my last article will ever be published, which is in their hands, but their intentions are unknown to me, and I can’t publish it until I know what their going to do with it.

This news and the release of Edison has actually left me with a bit of a sinking feeling, when FFG finally announces TH23 will it truly be the final release. The novels give me hope, but FFG continues to divert more and more resources to Dust franchises, and their hugely popular LCGs. Tannhauser has never been a big seller, and unless it overcomes it’s first edition stigma, I don’t see it ever becoming a top seller.

I can only hope that Tannhauser continues to grow in popularity, so FFG can feel justified in continuing its development.

Operation Night Eagle Officially Announced

FFG has officially posted their announcement for the next Tannhauser Novel, Operation Night Eagle.

The Schocktruppen staggered out of the burning archway, still shooting even though his trench coat was ablaze, the luminous green lenses of his gas mask eerie points of light in the corona of flame that ate away at his body. Brown raised up his bulky flash machine gun, too heavy for any regular soldier to have used without a tripod, and let the ghoul have it, the high energy capacitor’s whine sounding shrill even over the thunder of the cannon’s roar as the Schocktruppen came apart in a hail of lead.“And that’s all Detroit has to say about that,” the burly sergeant grunted through clenched teeth.

All around him were the sights and sounds of furious battle, the crackle of gunfire, the cries of the dying, and the dull roar of grenades, mixed with less familiar and far stranger phenomenon like the acrid reddish fog billowing from the keep that smelled of sulfur and blood that stole his breath away, and the weird, reverberating howls that grabbed hold of your guts like a dead man’s hand come up from hell.
He was already bleeding freely from a shrapnel gash in his bicep, and he’d taken a bullet in his calf that reminded him it was still in there somewhere every time he moved, and what was worse was he was already near the end of his second ammo belt. But he’d seen worse and had worse, and this shindig wasn’t over yet.

Can’t wait to see more.

Updated Info for Edison and Night Eagle

First we have the contents for the Edison expansion, which as I suspected will contain a single 12 token punch sheet. And for those who were wondering, I don’t believe Edison is an “Epic Hero”, I think they would have mentioned that in the official announcement. Thanks to my readers for letting me know FFG had updated the TH product page.

The Edison Single Miniature Pack contains:

  • One painted Edison miniature with character sheet
  • Twelve Game tokens
  • Ten Equipment Cards
  • A Twelve-page rulebook
  • One dedicated scenario

In other news I have the item number and ISBN for the new novel and Edison added to my TH item list.

A Tale of Two Edisons

James Curtis Edison is the latest Tannhauser hero to join the ranks of the Union, he previously appeared in the card game Tannhauser: Field Ops, and he has a couple previous mentions in the old fluff, but the newly announced Edison is not the one older fans may remember.

Here is how Edison appeared in Field Ops.

Here is how he appears on the current art.

You can see that it’s the same art with just a horizontal flip, and that’s where the similarities begin to end.

The U-Chronic History of James Curtis Edison

Edison’s history has been changed, along with few other things. Here are some items of note.

His older fluff history:

1905: Birth of James Curtis Edison, grandson of future Union President Thomas Alva Edison.

1951: Operation “Field-Ops” is launched by Union High Command. The attack on the Bloody Mary beach is assigned to the Airborne Destruction Squad led by Major General James Curtis Edison. In response, the Kaiser entrusts the defense of the coastline to the Eisendivision, led by Baron Colonel Reimard Von Karloff, Grand Master of the Lodge of Saint-Vehme.

However, it’s obvious FFG has created almost an entirely new Edison for this new release, If you look at this enlargement from the banner ad, you can see the text has the date 1917 and Edison’s age as 17. Which means he’d been born in 1900, also it indicates that James is Thomas’ son and not grandson.

ed 3

A similar story appears in the official FFG announcement.

In the early years of the Great War, a single plane appeared over Germany. It meticulously bombed key Reich locations, and then, without stopping, crossed over the Atlantic, heading directly for Washington D.C. When the craft unabashedly landed at the Potomac airbase, no one expected to see young James Curtis Edison step out of the cockpit to be greeted by his father, Thomas Edison, who had lost the presidency to the revolutionary Woodrow Wilson in the election three years prior.

Both Edisons took the world by storm after that fateful day. James Curtis Edison took to the battlefield, fighting alongside the common soldier, while his father took back the presidency with a tactical genius unmatched by most generals. When James Curtis Edison takes to the field, every Union soldier who serves under him knows he’s in good hands. Edison has never left a man behind, and is always the last man to leave a mission. His age, experience, and charisma leaves no doubt in anyone’s mind that he will be president of the free Union of Nations one day.

Also the official announcement (HERE) has reduced his rank to Colonel, he was previously a Major General, and his gun the “BFG” has been renamed MENLO, and apparently can alter time itself.

Here is a look at his old equipment from Field Ops, although it’s unlikely any of this has been kept, save that art for his gun:

MAJOR GENERAL: Play this card during an Order Distribution Phase. 1 Troop or 1 Elite Troop can have a maximum of a 2-Order difference with all other Union Ally.

HIGHWAY TO HELL: “Drop” this card over the Battlefield from a height of at least 50cm so that it “flips” at least 1 time. All units that are touched, even slightly, suffer 1 Hand-to-Hand attack of 2 dice.

BFG: Target 1 Unit at a YELLOW Maximum Distance of Edison’s Targeting Icon. Throw 2 dice. One a double, said Unit is destroyed and discarded.

COVERING FIRE: 1 Unit located in Edison’s Line of Sight (no limit on distance) will not be able to Shoot until the end of the Turn.

Finally a look at the promotional fan seems to indicate Edison will have two punch sheets of tokens, but it’s hard to say for sure, it may be showing both the front and back of a single token sheet, which FFG has favored of late.

Well hope that isn’t too confusing, but helps you to see that FFG has moved beyond recycling older TOY content and has begun to create it’s own story. All for now…

May Bonus Token: The Minoan Token

Sorry for the delay, but I somehow missed the beginning of May.

Anyway here is the new bonus token…

The Minoan Trident

Previously known as “Artifact Zero”, the Trident very first artifact to be collected and the initial reason for the Warehouses' existence. Rumored to be responsible for the destruction of the Minoan civilization and, consequently, the legend of the destruction of Atlantis. It is capable causing massive seismic disruptions when jammed into the ground, and has been described as the first weapon of mass destruction. However no one has yet been able to unleash it’s full potential.

Also as a bonus bonus, here is the card for Godfrid’s Spoon, which I forgot to post last month.

Book Review in breif: The Zeppelin

Tannhauser fan W. Peter Miller, better known to us as Doc Savage is more then just a gamer and talented film editor, he is also a writer. His new Uchronic Tales series of novellas recently began with “The Zeppelin”. I was able to pick up the Nook version last night ($1.99), and I have to say I was through it in a bout an hour, I couldn’t put it down till I got to the end.

Without giving away too much The Zeppelin is the story of a young Clark Tyler and his mission to stop a massive new German airship in 1916, and get the girl of course. The story is full of adventure and eldritch gore, Doc’s villains the Arkanen Streitkrafte Agents, led by their dread Inspektor Orlok, are truly, wonderfully evil. Doc vividly depicts both them and the massive airship on which the story takes place.

The Zeppelin is a great bit of what Tannhauser Fans would recognize as eldritch horror in the Great War, and while Doc’s universe is unique, and in no way a TH rip off. All Tannhauser fans should enjoy it. The only real draw back to The Zeppelin is it’s only about 70 pages long, which while that’s a good length for a novella, it does leave you wanting more, but thankfully the second story in the series “The Horn” is already out.

Overall I have to give it a 9 out of 10, it’s engrossing and a great adventure, Doc’s tight prose flows well and the detail is great, although the word “Duralumin” is a bit overused. Defiantly a must read to help tide you over till the first Tannhauser novel is released.

If you check Doc’s blog you can get a printed version if you don’t have a Nook or Kindle. It’s also available via Smashwords.

Well I have to wrap this up now, I apologize for the brevity, but I’m still not feeling very well.

The Rumor Mill Churns and Churns…

Meister H. form Sweden has just forwarded this to me.

A new Tannhauser Novel “Tannhauser: Operation Night Eagle” which has the most awesome Ozo cover art ever.

new cover

Here is the description from this SITE:

The year is 1954, and in a dark and violent alternate history, the Great War never ended. When the occult-obsessed Reich sets its sights on an ancient artifact held in Washington, D.C.'s Smithsonian Castle, the ruthless General Hermann Von Heizinger plans an unprecedented raid on U.S. soil...and only Major John MacNeal and the elite soldiers of the 42nd Marines stand before them There's more to this mission than meets the eye, however. Why has the enigmatic Matriarchy mobilized its forces? And to whom is the mysterious mercenary Wolf truly loyal? Prepare for an epic battle that will rage deep into America's heartland.

I’m not familiar with the author but here is his Wikipedia entry:

Pardoe is one of the original writers for Battletech's fiction. He contributes more stories to on-line pay-to-read fiction website, Battlecorps. His best known book in the MechWarrior Dark Ages line is Surrender Your Dreams. In 2008 his book on Frank Luke Jr., Terror of the Autumn Skies, was released (Skyhorse Publishing, 2008).[2]

He is a researcher, historian and writer specializing in topics around the Great War.

Pardoe lives in Amissville Virginia.[2]

Amazon UK lists it as available August 21st 2012, but gives no other info, I did not ses it on Amazon USA at the time of publishing, but I’m sure it will be up soon. However, you can find it on Barnes and Nobel's site.

Thanks again Meister H.

It is up on, and you can pre-order it.
