New Dust Tactics Unit Cards

First let me say it a holiday here, so I’ll be brief here’s the link: New Dust Unit Cards at Battlefront. And here are some pages from the new rule books. (Click to enlarge.)

I also have to say I’m a bit disappointed to see this, as I’ve already had to buy two packs of cards in the past and I’m loath to have to buy more, just for a style change. They do look good however and are a much more manageable size. I just hope that they are reasonably priced, when their made available in full faction decks early next year.

Happy gaming, and I’ll be back Monday.

Dust Tactics Classics, Axis x 2…

Today we have two Axis focused Dust Tactics Classics videos looking at the awesome Heavy Recon Grenadiers, and the frighteningly powerful close combat specialized Axis Gorillas.

Notes: None yet.

Well that’s all for today, I have about nine of these older units pre-shot and uploaded. So, I’ll have content for at least the next month, and of course we’ll have all the latest units as they’re released.

Happy gaming.

Bunkers and Strongpoints: Dust Tactics Video

Today’s special two part video is for all the newly released Dust Tactics.

Notes: I was tired when doing these video and made some mistakes when discussing the cover mechanics, but you should still understand what I was trying to say, and I did eventually remember how cover works in DT. Sorry only human.

As a bonus here are some custom unit ideas, to inspire and amaze.

Heroes of Normandie, Delayed

Despite their best efforts the guys from Devil Pig have run afoul of arcane guardians of publishing. This is to be expected from first timers like them and while it is extremely disappointing, it’s really not unexpected. So, long story short, HoN will be out sometime after Christmas, you can read more at the link below.

New Dust Tactics Starter Sets Coming Soon…

Battlefront Miniatures has just announced three new starter sets for Dust Tactics/Warfare, one for each faction. These are scheduled for release early next year.

Each box contains a mix of already available units. General contents are as follows: 1 hero, 1 Walker, 2 Infantry Units, 1 battle mat (these are double sided and 6x9 tactics squares), Terrain and Objective squares, and Faction themed Dice. The box sets are set to be Priced at US$50.

Here’s a look at the boxes, and you can learn more here:

The Allied set contains: Joe 22AP, Pounder 40AP, Bot Hunters 22AP, and Grim Reapers 26AP: AP total 110.

The Axis set contains: Stefan 18AP, Ludwig 40AP, Recon Grenadiers 16AP, and Heavy Laser Grenadiers 30AP: AP Total 104.

The SSU Set contains: Koshka 18AP, Red Storm 21AP, Fakyeli 28AP, and Grandma 36AP: AP Total 103.

Update: Andrew Haught of Battlefront has posted this on the Dust forums:

“We may have changed something that makes the SSU box set on par with the others...

Stay tuned we will have more in depth looks at the box sets in the up coming weeks...”

So we’ll all have to wait and see how the SSU box will change, although I must say I think this is more of a Warfare concern as for DT the SSU box seems fine, but for DW, I don’t think it would be playable on it’s own.

Note: The AP values are based on the currently available Dust Tactics units, if they make any changes to their weapons load-outs, the points may be higher or lower.

Hopefully we’ll have videos for these as soon as we can. But that will be up to Battlefront.

Happy gaming.

The Devil Dogs: Dust Tactics Video

Today’s video looks at the new Allied infantry armor 1 USMC squad for Dust Tactics. These guys are a great low AP cost unit, that can add twice the firepower of an armor 2 unit for half the cost.

Notes: The Sargent's machete is supposed to be in the box in a little bag, but mine was not there, I’ve double checked.

We’ll have more Dust Tactics Wave 8 this week, with the new Bunkers, and the SSU’s Steel Guard.

Happy gaming.

Latest Dust Arrivals…

The latest Dust releases from have arrived courtesy of Battlefront and Dust Studio. Sorry for the glare. I’ll have a video on the new SSU infantry 4 units first (hopefully Tuesday). Then a two to three part mini-series looking at the bunkers and strongpoints.

Also there were some interesting part combinations involving allied walkers and the heavy phaser batteries, so expect to see something extra when the bunker videos go up in about a week.

Happy gaming.

See Clem from DPG on BBG TV

Clem from DPG was on Boardgame Geek TV during Essen Spiel earlier this month, and you can check it out here now.

This isn’t real in depth, and there are no real game-play examples, but you can get a look at the tiles, the quality of the pieces and Clem’s awesome tats. You’ll start seeing Heroes of Normandie for sale at retail in January of February 2014.

Happy watching.

Man that was a lot of initialisms in the title.

Paolo on Quality Control

Many folks have been complaining lately that there has been a noticeable drop in quality from Dust Studio lately. I myself have read several emails and Facebook posts complaining of paint issues, and other minor problems. I’ve also had several flawed models in the past couple months. Somewhat concerned we contacted Paolo and he gave us a kind and encouraging answer.

“… Our products in the past had too many QC issues and we decided to change manufacturer...

The new manufacturer is the one who made most of the products that you are mentioning and it seems that he did a worse job.

Well, good news is that our next products will be manufactured internally at my studio, and they should be 99% ok…”

- Paolo

So there you have it straight from the man himself, DT will be returning to in house manufacturing, and we should all see an increase in QC with Wave 9.

Adding Variety, Basic Modeling

Dust Tactics for a lot of folks is all about the models many player spend more time building and painting than playing. But even if your not an expert modeler, you can still add some variety to your models with some simple beginner techniques.

We’re going to be mostly looking at the Allied walkers today, as there are a lot of simple ways to make some neat variations on the Mickey theme; sometimes even without the use of tools. (In the background below you can see the Recon Mickey and Mickey ARV, both are great kits available from Dust Studio.)

First is the simplest, and that’s a turret swap, it requires no skill and little explanation. Want a Cobra that’s standing still, just move the turret to a different hull. A variation on this is the .50 Cal. Machinegun swap. The newer gun pintles easily accommodate the dual 50s found on larger walkers, but who says a medium walker can’t have one. This is another simple no tool, no glue change, that anyone can do.

More on gun swaps…

There are of course a variety of .50s available from both Dust Studio and found in various Dust Tactics packs. Aside from the dual .50s there are ones with tombstone ammo boxes, drum mags and standard square ammo boxes. The tombstones are the standard for today, but the Allied crew pack includes both a tombstone and a rarer drum style.

For those with a little skill, Dust Studio sells a variety of crew and other add-on bits to dress up your walkers. Below is a fully kit built Mickey turret, with crew available from Dust Studio. It also features a relocated “forward mounted” machinegun on a pintle from Dust Studio. This is a simple build and glue kit, and the gun mount only requires a small drill to make a little hole for the pintle pin.

Another great source of crew figures is the Heavy Support Walker pack which includes seven crew member in various poses. I decided it might be neat that instead of mounting them on the vehicle itself, I’d put them on bases. This allows for more dynamic displays, for filming and pictures. The bases are available from Dust Studio, and come in various styles. One other thing is you could use them as a health indicator for the vehicle, removing them as the vehicle takes damage (although that was not my primary goal).

But of course mods are not limited to Dust Studio products. Tamiya makes a lot of great accessory kits, and while most are in 1:35 scale, that doesn’t always mean you can’t use them. The jerry cans on the side of the Mickey style turrets, for instance, are actually 1:35 scale. Tamiya makes a great set of these that are not identical ot the Dust style, but look pretty good.

You can use them a lot of different ways, from dressing up vehicles, to making dioramic bases. One option I found was to add one to a figure; I used a hobby knife and trimmed off one of the magazines the ammo humper from the Support Walker was carrying, and gave him a gas can. (I actually needed the mag to fix a broken .50.)

Another example of a great use for Tamiya accessories, is using the Dust Studio plain figure sized bases, I made some neat objective markers. With the Axis style cans.

Of course simple tool free weapon swaps are not limited to the Allies, here is a quickly built Flamm-Ludwig, made with a standard Ludwig hull, and the Flamm-Luther’s weapon system.

As a special bonus here are our stats for the Flamm-Ludwig. We’ll have something for those Mickeys with dual .50s later next week.

Flamm-Ludwig copy

I hope you’ve found some inspiration here, and if you’ve never done any modeling remember it doesn’t have to hard, simple kits, and a little glue can go a long way to add uniqueness to your army.

Happy building.

Shadows of Brimstone, Kickstarter

Right now Flying Frog Productions (makers of Last Night on Earth and other great games) is having an amazing run on Kickstarter with their awesome Sci-Fi, Lovcraftian old west mash up Shadows of Brimstone.

For a brief description, lets look at what the Flying Frog guys say about it themselves.

“Shadows of Brimstone is a fast-paced, Cooperative, dungeon-crawl board-game set in the Old West, and mixed with Unspeakable Horror!

Players create characters, taking on the role of a classic Western Hero Archetype, such as the Law Man, Gunslinger, or Saloon Girl. Forming an adventuring posse, the Heroes venture down into the dark mines, overrun with all manner of ancient demons and foul creatures from another world. With tactical gameplay, lots of dice, and a robust card-driven exploration system, no two games are ever the same as the Heroes explore the mines finding new enemies to fight, new Loot to collect, and new dangers to overcome. Players can even find portals to other worlds, stepping through to continue their adventures on the other side!”

The game’s settings are quite varied because of all the alien worlds the players can visit, from alien frozen wastes, to jungles, to industrial war torn worlds. This allows for a vast amount of replay-ability, and diversity in game-play and storytelling.

The game launches with two core sets filled with great miniatures, a puzzle build terrain board system and even a sound track CD! Each core set and expansion will offer a unique play experience with new place to explore and new enemies to face.

That’s all I have for now, if your interested you should defiantly check it out.

Rimworld: A Video Game Review

Update: this project’s final funding total was $268,132.00, with 9498 backers. Congratulations to Tynan, and here’s to RimWorld’s future.

Every so often something comes along that is completely outside our scope of normal coverage, but is so much fun it cannot be ignored. And that’s Rimworld a game by Tynan Sylvester that’s currently up on Kickstarter. Where it has cleared its funding goal in a matter of days, and has now more then doubled it.

Tynan was kind enough to give us a copy of the Pre-Alpha version of Rimworld to let us tell you all about it.

(Remember that everything we’re going to talk about here is from an early build of the game, and will be subject to change. Everyone who backs the Kickstarter at the $30 CAD level or higher will get a copy of this same Alpha build after the Kickstarter concludes. )

Rimworld 10

Click on any image for a larger version.

First let’s talk about what Rimworld is.

Rimworld is a single-player strategy game where you are trying to survive on a deserted planet with only what you can find and build. The look of Rimworld currently resembles Prison Architect (but that will be changed once Tynan hires an artist), as does some of the game-play. With the main mechanical similarity being the click and drag to build, and plopables system. But that’s where the similarities end.

Mechanically speaking Rimworld’s primary difference from similar games is its AI Storyteller. The Storyteller (inspired by Left 4 Dead’s “Director”) controls how the “random events” will flow during the game. They will affect the weather, determine if and when you’ll be attacked by pirates, or if new folks will stumble on to your colony and join you.

Rimworld 9

Currently there’s only one real storyteller “Cassandra Classic” and she steadily increases the challenges the game throws at you. For example: while early on pirates may come in groups of two or three, by the two hour mark or so, you might face eight or more. There is also “Randy Random” who just throws truly random events at you. And eventually there will be at least one more “Phoebe Friendly” who will keep the violence to a minimum and let you enjoy the building aspects of the game. Right now Tynan is asking his Kickstarter backers if there are any other types of Storytellers they might like to see. So, if you have an idea and you’re a backer feel free to make a suggestion. You can also head over to to find out more and join the forums there.

Now lets talk about my gameplay experience.

Last week’s Z’cide Scenario Corrected

Last week our epic Zombicide scenario “Z1 The Last Journey,” had an oversight in which a couple of important rules were omitted. This PDF is the corrected version. Sorry for the trouble.
